Where Is the Battery in a BMW X5?
Most BMW X5 12V batteries are below the rear cargo floor. Hybrids may have additional batteries; use the under-hood terminals to jump-start or charge.
The BMW X5’s main 12-volt vehicle battery is normally in the rear luggage compartment, below the cargo floor—not beside the engine. The panels and hardware above it vary by generation, engine and equipment.
If the goal is only to jump-start or charge the X5, do not dismantle the cargo area. Use the designated positive and ground connections under the hood.

BMW’s F15 technical training material places its AGM battery on the left in the luggage compartment below the toolkit. It also says an auxiliary AGM battery is fitted on some configurations (BMW F15 technical training manual).

How to reach the rear battery
- Park securely, switch the vehicle off and keep the remote key away from it.
- Open the tailgate and remove loose cargo.
- Raise the cargo-floor panel.
- Identify the fitted service cover or toolkit panel before removing any clips or fasteners.
- Stop once you can identify the battery and its labels. Do not disconnect anything unless you have the correct procedure for that exact vehicle.
Do not force trim or assume the first electrical component you see is the starter battery. Fuse carriers, power-distribution hardware and—in electrified models—other battery-system components may share the area.
G05 mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids are different
“Battery location” does not have one complete answer for every fourth-generation X5.
BMW’s 2023 X5 manual says mild-hybrid vehicles have a 48-volt battery under a cover in the engine compartment. It also says not to replace or work on that battery (2023 X5 battery instructions). That is separate from the vehicle’s 12V electrical supply.
The G05 plug-in-hybrid arrangement differs again. BMW’s rescue sheet identifies two 12V batteries accessible after luggage-compartment covers are removed. It locates the high-voltage traction battery in the underbody (BMW G05 PHEV rescue sheet).
Do not touch orange cables, a high-voltage disconnect or the traction battery. Rescue-sheet disconnection procedures are for trained emergency personnel, not routine owner maintenance.
Jump-start or charge from under the hood
Direct access to the rear battery is normally unnecessary for starting assistance. BMW’s F15 and G05 manuals locate the starting-aid connections in the engine compartment. Use the covered positive terminal and the specified engine or body ground—not an improvised body fastener (2014–2018 X5 jump-start instructions, 2023 X5 jump-start instructions).
For charging, BMW’s 2023 manual says to connect a suitable charger only through those under-hood starting-aid terminals, with the engine off. On a mild-hybrid X5, the hood must remain open while charging (2023 X5 battery instructions). Follow the manual for the exact cable sequence and charger requirements.
Before replacing an X5 battery
Finding the battery does not establish the correct replacement specification. Confirm the battery chemistry, dimensions and capacity for the VIN, and check whether the vehicle has an auxiliary battery.
BMW recommends using a battery it classifies as suitable, having replacement performed by a qualified workshop and registering the new battery with the vehicle. Its 2023 manual says registration restores unrestricted comfort functions and clears related Check Control messages (2023 X5 battery instructions). Leave 48V and high-voltage work to an appropriately trained facility.
If the X5 starts normally but only the remote buttons or Comfort Access fail, diagnose the key separately. Try the spare fob and check the remote’s coin cell before disturbing the vehicle battery.
