What Should You Pay to Replace a Key Fob Battery?

Leo Tran · 3 min read

Compare a $4.99 DIY battery pack with $16.99 installed service, weigh an unlimited plan, and know what to ask a locksmith or dealership.

For a fob that takes a replaceable CR2032 battery, one U.S. price comparison is $4.99 for a DIY two-pack versus $16.99 for an installed replacement. Target advertises the Energizer two-pack at that price when purchased online; Batteries Plus lists the battery-and-installation service with Virginia Beach selected. These are specific advertised examples—not national averages or quotes for every fob. (Target battery pack, Batteries Plus installation)

The important distinction is replacing the battery in your existing fob, not buying, cutting or programming a replacement key.

Sources: Target CR2032 two-pack, one-time installation, unlimited replacement plan. Batteries Plus says prices and services vary by location, multiple-battery fobs may incur additional fees, and some models may be excluded.

For locksmith service, Metro Locksmith in Omaha offers both shop and mobile battery replacement with testing, but does not publish a fixed price on that service page. Likewise, Serra Buick GMC Champaign advertises fob-battery service without a dollar price. Treat those as quote-required options, not evidence of a nationwide rate.

Which option is worth paying for?

Choose DIY when you have confirmed the battery and opening method. The $4.99 example applies to CR2032, not every remote. Check your model-year owner’s manual and the installed cell’s full code before buying. Batteries Plus identifies CR2025 and CR2032 as common types but advises using the exact battery specified for the fob. (Battery identification guidance)

For example, Ford owners can use our Ford Explorer battery guide to narrow the fob design rather than buying from the Ford name alone.

Choose installed service if you would rather have someone identify the cell and open the housing. Ask whether the quoted price covers your exact fob, especially if it holds more than one battery. Check dealer specials before booking, too.

Consider the unlimited plan only if you expect to use it again. At the displayed prices, two separate $16.99 swaps total $33.98, versus $23.99 for the plan. It therefore costs less by the second covered replacement, assuming those prices and eligibility remain applicable. That is a comparison with paid installation—not proof that the plan beats DIY. Confirm exclusions and how to claim future service before paying.

Before approving a larger bill

Ask: “What is the total to replace only the battery in my existing fob, including installation and tax? Please quote any diagnosis, programming or mobile call-out separately.” Provide the vehicle’s year, make and model, and describe the remote.

Do not automatically authorize programming as part of a battery swap. Ford explicitly says battery replacement does not erase the programmed key from the vehicle. Other vehicles should be checked against their own instructions, not a generic reset routine. (Ford support)

If the new battery does not restore operation, ask what testing supports the next repair before paying for another battery, programming or a complete fob.
