Replacing an Equinox key fob starts with the year, not the shape

Match your Chevy Equinox replacement fob, check whether DIY programming applies, compare parts-only prices, and arrange cutting and lost-key removal.

A replacement Equinox fob needs the correct electronics, programming and a usable mechanical key—not just matching buttons. Before buying, identify the model year, ignition type and number of keys the vehicle still recognizes. Those details determine whether an owner-manual programming procedure is available or you should arrange professional service.

This guide uses U.S./Canada manuals for the gasoline Equinox. Do not apply its fob specifications or procedures to an Equinox EV or another market without checking the exact vehicle in Chevrolet’s manual finder.

1. Check whether you need a whole fob

If you still have the remote, start with its symptoms:

  • Reduced range or a battery warning: Check distance, signal obstructions and the fob battery before ordering a replacement. Chevrolet lists those checks before recommending dealer or qualified-technician service in the 2026 Equinox manual, page 7.
  • One remote fails but the spare works: Check the failing remote’s battery and condition first.
  • Both remotes fail: Have the vehicle and remotes diagnosed rather than buying two fobs on that evidence alone.
  • Only the case is damaged: Check whether a replacement housing can retain the existing electronics and key. Confirm whether the product is a shell or a complete transmitter before paying.

Do not assume every Equinox remote takes a CR2032. The documented 2024 smart fob uses CR2032, while the 2025 and 2026 design uses CR2450. Opening methods also differ. See the 2024 manual, pages 13–14, 2025 manual, pages 11–12 and 2026 manual, pages 11–12.

For a battery-only repair, use our Equinox key-fob battery guide alongside your exact manual.

2. Match the replacement before ordering

Gather the following for the seller and whoever will program it:

  • Model year and VIN.
  • Turn-key ignition or push-button start.
  • Part number and FCC ID from the existing remote, if available.
  • Button functions, including remote start and power liftgate where equipped.
  • Number of recognized keys or fobs remaining.
  • Whether the replacement is new OEM, refurbished OEM or aftermarket.

Appearance is not enough. Remotes and Keys warns that identical-looking fobs can contain different electronics and recommends checking the part number and FCC ID. Its 2025 Equinox listing, for example, identifies part 13548436 as a three-button Lock/Unlock/Panic remote. That is one listed option, not a universal Equinox part number.

If no original remains, ask the provider to confirm the correct part from the VIN. Also get approval before buying a used or refurbished remote: ask whether that exact unit is ready to program to your vehicle and what happens if programming fails.

3. Choose programming by the exact manual

There is no single Equinox relearn procedure. These documented examples show why generic “Chevy key-fob programming” instructions can be misleading:

Documented vehicle Owner-manual programming guidance
2016 Equinox with flip key and turn-key ignition Lists an add-key procedure using one already programmed key. It also directs owners to a dealer for new transmitter programming. Do not treat key learning as proof that every replacement’s remote buttons will work.
2018 and 2024 Equinox with push-button start List a shorter add-fob procedure when two recognized remotes are available. With fewer than two, a separate approximately 30-minute procedure is listed; that feature is not available in Canada.
2025 and 2026 Equinox Direct replacement remote-key purchase and programming through the dealer; no owner add-fob sequence is supplied in the programming section.

Sources: Chevrolet’s 2016 manual, pages 27–28, 2018 manual, pages 35–37, 2024 manual, pages 11–12, 2025 manual, page 10 and 2026 manual, page 10.

Stop before a timed relearn unless all remotes you want to keep are present. The 2018 and 2024 procedures invalidate previously known remotes after the third waiting cycle; those you retain must be relearned. One working fob does not qualify for their two-fob shortcut. Both routes also require a mechanical key that can turn the driver-door lock—an uncut blade will not meet that prerequisite.

Use our Equinox programming guide to identify the applicable route, then follow the exact model-year manual. For a 2025 or 2026, contact the dealer first. If considering an automotive locksmith, confirm support for your exact year before ordering; the 2025 retailer listing describes professional scan-tool programming rather than onboard programming.

4. Compare the complete price—not just the remote

Parts-only prices can differ even for the same number. On October 14, 2026, these listings showed:

Listed replacement Advertised parts-only price
GM transmitter 13548436 at GMPartsNow $60.95
2025 Equinox remote 13548436, OEM New selection at Remotes and Keys $129.95

These are not installed replacement quotes or recommendations for every trim. Shipping and tax may add to an online order. Request a written total covering the fob, mechanical-key cutting, programming, tax and any mobile callout or transport charge. Ask whether customer-supplied fobs are accepted and whether an unsuccessful programming attempt still incurs a fee.

For lost keys, prepare the VIN, photo ID and proof of ownership. Patriot Chevrolet of Warminster identifies those documents as potentially required and advises confirming whether parts are on hand or need ordering.

5. Check access, starting and lost-key removal

Before accepting the job, test separately:

  1. Mechanical-key operation in the driver-door lock.
  2. Remote lock, unlock and panic buttons.
  3. Normal ignition starting or push-button starting with each fob individually. Keep other fobs away from the vehicle during each starting test so a working spare cannot mask a problem.
  4. Passive entry, remote start and power liftgate, where equipped.
  5. Every retained spare.

If a fob was lost or stolen, explicitly request that its electronic authorization be removed—not merely that another fob be added. The 2024 manual says the vehicle can be reprogrammed so missing remotes no longer work. The 2026 manual requires remaining remotes to be reprogrammed during replacement.

Electronic removal does not change the door lock’s mechanical cut. If the missing key creates an access concern, ask separately about the lock hardware.
