Dodge Durango Key Fob Not Working? Check These First

Diagnose Durango remote, passive-entry and starting problems. Check the battery, match the backup-start method, and know when to seek service.
If your Dodge Durango key fob is not working, first check whether the remote buttons, door-handle entry, or engine starting has failed. Those are different functions; a problem with one does not automatically mean you need a replacement fob.
Before opening anything, note your model year and ignition type. The battery and backup-start procedures below match the fob documented in the 2024 Durango owner’s manual, not every Durango. Use the Mopar owner’s-manual selector to match your vehicle rather than following a generic Dodge reset.
1. Compare the spare and check vehicle power
Park safely, switch the ignition off, and test lock and unlock close to the vehicle. Keep the fob separate from your phone or laptop: Dodge warns that nearby electronics can block its wireless signal and interfere with Passive Entry. (2024 Durango manual, Passive Entry section)
Then try a spare that previously worked, testing each fob separately.
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The spare works; the usual fob does not | Battery installation, buttons and damage in the usual fob |
| Both fobs fail and the dashboard or interior lights are weak or dead | Vehicle 12-volt battery and power supply before buying a fob |
| Remote buttons work, but grabbing the handle does not unlock | Passive Entry settings and handle operation |
| Lock/unlock works, but remote start does not | Remote-start conditions and dashboard cancellation messages |
| “Key Fob Not Detected” appears | The matching backup-start method below |
These checks narrow the diagnosis; they do not prove a particular receiver or antenna has failed. If both fobs fail with normal vehicle power, arrange testing rather than replacing both remotes on suspicion.
2. Locked out or unable to start? Match the backup method
Emergency entry is separate from starting
If your fob contains a removable metal emergency key, use the matching manual’s instructions to remove it and unlock the driver’s door. This provides mechanical entry, not electronic start authorization.
On the 2024 Durango, using the driver’s door key cylinder while the alarm is armed will sound the alarm when the door opens. The manual lists cycling the ignition out of OFF as one way to disarm it. (2024 manual, Vehicle Security System section)
2024 Durango: fob against the START/STOP button
For the push-button system documented in the 2024 manual:
- Put the transmission in PARK and apply the parking brake.
- Press the brake pedal.
- Place the nose of the fob—the end opposite the emergency key—against the START/STOP button, then push the button with the fob.
Dodge documents this backup method for a low or depleted fob battery when “Key Fob Not Detected” appears. It requires a fob already programmed to the vehicle; it is not a programming procedure. (2024 manual, Ignition Switch section)
Do not assume this procedure applies to an older ignition arrangement, or pry out a START/STOP button based on a generic video. Follow your model-year manual’s instructions.
If the correct backup method and a known-good spare both fail, seek roadside assistance or vehicle diagnosis.
3. Check or replace the fob battery
The 2024 Durango manual specifies one CR2032. The 2012 manual also specifies a CR2032, but that does not establish one opening procedure for every Durango or aftermarket replacement fob. Match the fob, battery code and manual before proceeding. (2024 battery instructions; 2012 battery specification)
For the fob shown in the 2024 manual:
- Slide the release on the back and pull out the emergency key.
- Gently separate the case halves with a coin or flat-blade screwdriver, avoiding damage to the seal.
- Remove the back cover and replace the battery. Match the battery’s “+” to the “+” marked inside the battery clip—do not guess from how another fob looks.
- Avoid touching the circuit board and battery terminals. Snap the case halves securely together.
- Test remote locking, Passive Entry and starting separately.
Keep new and used coin cells away from children. If the compartment will not close securely, stop using the fob and keep it away from children. If a battery may have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention. (2024 manual, battery instructions and warnings)
If the problem began immediately after replacement, reopen the case and check the cell code, polarity, seating and case alignment. Look for displaced contacts without bending or scraping them. Try another fresh cell of the specified type before paying for programming. See checks after a key-fob battery change.
4. Only one feature fails? Check that feature
Door-handle entry only: On the 2024 Durango, Passive Entry can be switched on or off in Uconnect settings. Check that it is enabled and keep the fob away from electronics before testing again. (2024 manual, Passive Entry section)
Remote start only: Do not treat this as proof of a dead fob. For the 2024 model, remote start requires two button presses within five seconds and conditions including closed doors, hood and liftgate, adequate vehicle-battery charge and fuel, and no illuminated malfunction indicator light. Read the cancellation message before replacing anything. Never test remote start in an enclosed garage or confined area. (2024 manual, Remote Start section)
5. When testing or programming is the next step
Arrange professional diagnosis if a fresh, correctly installed battery does not restore operation, the fob has visible water or impact damage, or both programmed fobs fail despite normal vehicle power. Ask for fob and vehicle-side testing before authorizing replacement.
A newly purchased fob must be compatible and programmed to the Durango’s electronics to start it. The 2024 manual identifies an authorized dealer as a provider for programming blank replacement fobs and says to bring all vehicle keys when the immobilizer system is serviced. This is separate from changing the coin cell; the battery-replacement instructions contain no pairing sequence. (2024 manual, Programming And Requesting Additional Key Fobs section)
If comparing a dealer with an automotive locksmith, confirm that the provider has programming equipment for your exact year and ignition system. Request a quote separating diagnosis, the fob, programming and emergency-key cutting—and state whether you still have a working key.
